The May 12, 1979 Coffee Mug

Funny what technology has done to us.  As we burn CD's and such on our computers these days, we must wait that 3 to 5 minutes and just ponder and inspect our surroundings.  During this visual scan tonight, I looked on top of my computer desk shelf and stared at my ~30 year old coffee mugs (shown below).  I bought these the week before my wedding on May 12, 1979 (B.S. aka "Before Shelly"...about 9 months before).  I bought 7 of them.  I bought them from a cigar shop at Eastland Mall by Detroit.  Very unique.  I decided these would be my excellent gifts to the gentlemen standing up in my wedding.  Five for the guys standing up (Craig, Hubie, Smick, my brother, and another friend)...one for me...and a "spare".

Craig hired in at Monsanto in March 1979.  After a short stint at Proctor & Gamble, I quit, and joined Monsanto in Nov 1979.  And low and behold...my first office mate was Craig.  And he was drinking his daily coffee from his notorious coffee mug he received on May 12, 1979.  Sometime in early 1981-ish...a loud glass crash was heard in one of the offices (they had split up Craig and me earlier so he could mentor a newly hired young engineer...who Narsh accurately quotes her [as I chuckle] as always saying "you stupid idiot")...Craig had bumped his favorite coffee mug accidentally and it smashed on the floor.  He told me months later how much this bothered him.

In hindsight, I wished I would've given him the "spare".  As the moral continues in this saga...no matter where you look, there's some symbol of Craig.  L&T's, Peat & Family
