Quartermania and Sturgis

Craig and Shelly

I'm so sorry we missed the Quartermania.  From all reports, it was a resounding success and a lot of fun.  It does sound like I at least made some people spend more money with my advance silent auction bids (that's always fun--making people like Russ Kuttenkuler spend more money--even if I wasn't there to see it!).

I promised I'd try to provide a redneck photo from our trip to Sturgis on the motorcycle.  Just let me say:  we said we were going to Sturgis but what we really did was see America the Beautiful with a 3 hour stop in Sturgis.  I know, 3 hours isn't enough to scratch the surface, but we got in, took some pictures, bought our T-shirts and "I rode mine" patches, and got out before it got crazy.  Besides, there was just too much beautiful scenery and motorcycle riding to do to spend much time in a tourist-trap like Main Street Sturgis is!

I have one redneck photo and one vivid memory of what could have been a great photo (but I didn't have the sense or the guts to take the picture!).  The photo is below:  people went to Sturgis lots of ways, lots of bikers riding all the way like we did, and many in trucks and trailers.  The folks below at least had a sense of humor about it.

The vivid memory is of a weathered old guy riding his bike like it was a lounge chair:  leaning back against his tent, blue cooler, and other junk just piled and roped on the back of his bike, his feet propped up on the headlights, steering with one hand and smoking a big old stogie.  We saw him on the road and later on at a rest stop.  When we saw him at the rest stop, he had added a cardboard box of cantaloupe and corn on the cob that he had bought along the roadside and just stuck on top of his Beverly Hillbillies stack of stuff.  Just hilarious!  I didn't think he'd see the humor in my taking a picture of him....

We really did see America the Beautiful--I've included a few shots here of just some of the sights.  I'll share some more later.  This was probably the best vacation we've ever done--all 3,000 miles of it in 9 days!

Yes, we really did make it to Sturgis.

The Badlands are amazing--and a wonderful motorcycle ride!

Sunset as we ride into Deadwood, South Dakota.  I got really good at taking pictures on the back of the motorcycle.

love, deb
